hot and rainy!

hi! it has been either hotter than hades or pouring rain and thunder showers lately, and you want to put on a sweater.  not very good picture taking weather...

there has been a bird singing REALLY LOUDLY outside of our bedroom window in the mornings. one morning i went out and saw it perched on the top of the roof, singing away, but i didn't get a good look at it. yesterday i was sitting in the yard, between raindrops, and i caught the little devil in the act! it was a yellowthroated warbler, a green-ish grey little bird with a black mask. aha!!! it has a very distinctive song described in the bird book as "witchity witchity witchity witch" (and they should've added REALLY LOUD and incessant!) yup, that's it! damn cute, but damn annoying at 5:00 a.m. :)

happy weekend!

fabric giveaway!!!

this was a sewing weekend! i've had a couple of projects in my head for a while now to make for my niece and my little friend olive. finally i felt like doing it! you know how sometimes you just do not feel like sewing(or knitting or crocheting)? i'm glad it's back!

i am not the best sewer in the world, so i like the patterns that say "sewing for dummies" and " fast and easy".  and i have to say i was scratching my head at times with the "easy" one. "understitching"??? what the heck is that? i ended up just topstitching instead, and that was fine...

i was given that leopard (ocelot?) fabric by a nice woman who comes into the bakery. it's really nice, hand-printed, but i just didn't know what i'd ever use it for. but then i thought it was kind of lily pulitzer-ish and might make a nice simple dress. i like how it came out, and i think it's perfect for a 6-year-old!

i was also happy with the top. i've made that pattern several times, often with some cursing involved, but this time went very smoothly! i'd just say that if you make it, add to the length. i added 4" which seems about right (on the 4-year-old size).

i have about a yard of the leopard fabric left and if anybody wants it, leave your name here(or on facebook ) and i will send it to you!! i will draw a name from the comments TOMORROW(that's TUESDAY), and mail it off to you!

(i am using all of the restraint i have not to complain about the heat, thank you very much!)

**HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!!!!**

summer solstice

happy summer solstice!!

we are going to the strawberry church supper in charlestown, nh tomorrow night. my grandmother loved that supper, and we went every year and now that she is gone, we continue the tradition ( much to the dismay of some family members, and the delight of others!) the dinner itself may leave something to be desired, lots of salads mostly involving mayonnaise, lots of jello salads and ham. BUT, the strawberry shortcake is outstanding!! strawberries picked that morning with homemade biscuits and fresh whipped cream. yuuuuummy! i'd say we've attended this supper upwards of 30 years.

enjoy your summer weekend, and eat some strawberries if you get the chance!

zinnias

i am finally getting around to finishing up some garlands for an order i have. i think working on my quilt kind of burned me out for a while...there are things i need to be making, but i'd much rather be outside!

ALSO, i watched the BEST bbc miniseries called "top of the lake". it's only 7 episodes and i watched them all in two evenings-obsessed!! i highly recommend it! (you can watch it all on netflix instant watch, if you have that!)

i planted 36 zinnia plants the other day. i looooooove zinnias!!

happy hump day!

super lucky trade!

i did a trade the other day with my super talented quilter friend hannah. my part of the trade was a couple of crocheted garlands, and she said she had a "surprise" for me, which turned out to be a WHOLE BAG full of vintage sheets!!

that girl knows what i like!!

they are drying on the line right now. there is nothing lovelier than pretty sheets on the line on a sunny day! i  have some very special plans for them...yay!! thanks again, hannah!

still here!

hi! i'm still here! it's been a bit of a rough re-entry to work, starting the week off with a stomach flu, and adding another day to my vacation(sort of!  that's never suspicious, right?)  i've had no energy all week, but today i'm finally feeling better!

i was walking rosco in the rain this afternoon, with my umbrella, and met a woman walking across the street who was wearing an umbrella hat. i said, "nice hat". she told me it was from china and was used as a sun hat but also worked well in the rain. then she said, "i have something for you", reached into her bag and handed me an oil painting that she had made. she said she was giving them to people with umbrellas. kind of crazy, but also kind of made my day!

happy rainy thursday!

shun-piking

yesterday we took a drive off the beaten path, "shun-piking" as my parents would say. we ended up finding this little lighthouse at squirrel point! we followed a poorly marked trail through the woods, wondering the whole time if we were actually going to find anything at all, but we finally came across these abandoned caretakers buildings and the lighthouse! just gorgeous!

the day couldn't have been more perfect. sunny, 70's, no humidity, no bugs(!) . AND, there was a bald eagle fishing there in the bay! so beautiful!

we had lunch overlooking sheepscot bay. it's nice having a stay-cation here in maine, "vacationland"!
