LOOK!

the house is CLEAN!!!

we had company on saturday, so most of the day was spent decluttering and cleaning the house.  i swear, we need to have guests once a week so that the house always looks like this...just don't look in my car, because it is full of bags of yarn and fabric.  i need a new wing of the house just for my craft supplies.  i'm sure some of you out there can relate.....

i also rearranged the living room a bit.  i got that green chair at a yard sale this summer for $15.00!  yay!!

and here's a sweet picture of the birthday boy.  rosco turned 13 this month.  happy birthday, rosco!!!!!

lately

not a whole lot going on around here lately.  i went peach picking with two of my cousins which was really fun and such good peaches!!

i'm slowly plugging away at the x and + quilt.  i can't wait til i have time to really crank those squares out!!  i found some sweet prints the other day at the fabric store.  the green polka dot fabric was given to me by my friends kelly and roger who found it at the flea market.  i love it!

we've had some crazy weather this week-HOT and terrible thunder storms! brian and i took a walk this afternoon and found a spot on the sidewalk where the lightening hit and turned the area to glass!  pretty cool!

pretty relaxing day here today which has been niiiiiccceeeeee!  enjoy your sunday!

dogs, elves, birds and more!!

we went to the flea market this morning, and may i say, get ready for cuteness overload!!!!!

bird theme!  the seagull looks so good on the shed door.

elf theme!  i have found so many of these little planters this year. i think this picture makes him look a bit creepy, but really he's very cute.

got this recipe box (the aqua inside is what sold me), and about a million yards of this pretty curtain fabric!

dog theme!  aren't the collies adorable?!?! i think this is a planter too, but i don't really know how you'd keep a plant in there. i think it would make a perfect business card holder for the craft fairs. hmmm, now maybe i need to make business cards for my non-existent business.....

a very successful flea market day!!!

hot and rainy!

hi! it has been either hotter than hades or pouring rain and thunder showers lately, and you want to put on a sweater.  not very good picture taking weather...

there has been a bird singing REALLY LOUDLY outside of our bedroom window in the mornings. one morning i went out and saw it perched on the top of the roof, singing away, but i didn't get a good look at it. yesterday i was sitting in the yard, between raindrops, and i caught the little devil in the act! it was a yellowthroated warbler, a green-ish grey little bird with a black mask. aha!!! it has a very distinctive song described in the bird book as "witchity witchity witchity witch" (and they should've added REALLY LOUD and incessant!) yup, that's it! damn cute, but damn annoying at 5:00 a.m. :)

happy weekend!

vacation!

first day of vacation! i think i will spend today laying low and hanging with my peeps, as the weather is particularly LOATHESOME! hot is not my kind of weather, at all, and it's just too early for this! but enough complaining!

someone on the internet yesterday referred to hostas as "the throw pillows of the garden". brilliant!!!

keep cool everybody!

new sweater for rosco and a winter wonderland!

this was our yard at about 6:00 a.m. on monday. absolutely gorgeous!  today's weather can be described in one word: Y-U-C-K! slushy rain................

a couple of years ago i started this sweater for rosco. i was "winging it" , so to speak, and got it 99% finished and decided it wasn't quite right,  and put it away. the yarn is beautiful NORO, japanese yarn that i got at an odd shop that used to sell model trains and......yarn. an unusual combination. they were getting rid of the yarn section and selling it all 1/2 price, which was very nice, and the only reason i would be knitting a dog sweater with NORO!

i found the sweater the other day and made a couple of adjustments, and i think it came out pretty good! rosco was being completely uncooperative having his picture taken...i would love to know what goes on in that little mind of his. he hates having his picture taken! but he's happy to wear the sweater, so that's o.k.!

full SNOW moon

big full moon tonight! crazy dog, crazy cat, chickens laying eggs!

the february full moon is called the "snow" moon because of heavy snowfall during this month. the indians also called it the "hunger" moon, as hunting was often difficult with all of the snow.

we got a lot of wet, heavy snow yesterday. sure was beautiful this morning (will post photos!), but the warm sun melted a lot of it today.

happy monday!

brian and rosco make pizza

we love making pizza, and we make a pretty good pie, if i do say so myself! rosco is  a  "big help" in the kitchen, always willing to do any taste testing and cleaning up whatever finds its way to the floor...

here is the recipe we use for pizza dough. it's from the cookbook "cucina simpatica" from the owners of  al forno in providence, rhode island. it's a great recipe and works best if you use a pizza stone. preheat your oven to 450 degrees with the stone in the oven.

2 1/2 teas. active dry yeast (i use 1 T.)
1 cup warm water
pinch of sugar
2 1/4 teas. kosher salt
1/4 cup johnnycake meal or fine-ground white cornmeal
3 T. whole-wheat flour
1 T. virgin olive oil
2 1/2 to 3 1/2 cups unbleached white flour

1. dissolve the yeast in the warm water with the sugar.

2. after 5 minutes stir in the salt, johnnycake meal, whole-wheat flour and oil.

3. gradually add the white flour, stirring with a wooden spoon until a stiff dough has formed. (i always make this in a kitchen aid mixer-much easier all the way around!!)

4. place the dough on a floured board and knead it for several minutes, adding only enough additional flour to keep the dough from sticking. (again, i do the kneading in the mixer)

5. when the dough is smooth and shiny, transfer it to a bowl that has been brushed with olive oil. to prevent a skin from forming, brush the top of the dough with additional olive oil, cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place away from drafts, until double in bulk, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

6. punch down the dough and knead once more. let the dough rise again for about 40 minutes.

7. punch down the dough. if it is sticky knead in a bit more flour.

makes enough dough for 2 large pizzas!

yum! well worth the effort and fun to do! enjoy!!
