june full moon!

tonight's full moon is called the "strawberry moon". last night it was HUGE!

yay for sunday, yay for strawberries!!!


** i realized that i missed the may moon!! for those wondering, it is called the "flower moon". better than worms, that's for sure!**

pink moon

tonight's full moon is called the "pink moon", named for the herb moss pink or wild ground phlox, an early spring flower.

it has also been referred to as the "sprouting grass moon" and the "egg moon".

the march full moon has many names. the "crust" moon, for crusty snow.

the "sap" moon, for tapping trees.

the "crow" moon, for cawing crows.

the "worm" moon, for worms.

it is also considered to be the last full moon of winter! yahoo!!

full SNOW moon

big full moon tonight! crazy dog, crazy cat, chickens laying eggs!

the february full moon is called the "snow" moon because of heavy snowfall during this month. the indians also called it the "hunger" moon, as hunting was often difficult with all of the snow.

we got a lot of wet, heavy snow yesterday. sure was beautiful this morning (will post photos!), but the warm sun melted a lot of it today.

wolf moon

tonight's full moon was called the "wolf moon" by indians who would hear hungry howling outside their villages in the cold january winters.

i learned the other day that small birds like chick-a-dees, finches, and titmice hole up together in hollow trees or other enclosed spaces to keep warm at night. lots of them, and even different varieties, pile in together! yay for warm birds!!

the full moon tonight was called by the indians a "cold moon" or "long nights moon". no explanation needed there!

frosty moon

tomorrow night is the full moon. i love that every full moon has a name, and tomorrow's is the "full beaver moon". this name comes from the fact that beavers are busy now getting ready for winter, and also from the fact that trappers would set beaver traps  before the swamps froze so that they would have warm furs for the winter. it is also called the "frosty moon". i like this name better.
