in the kitchen

we had a  frost yesterday morning-chilly!

spent a lot of time in the kitchen this weekend, sewing and cooking. brian made the best chili i have ever had, and now he's watching football. i think i'll head upstairs and watch downton abbey. i watch it slowly because i don't want it to ever end....

i like your hat!

it feels like fall has finally made a commitment to stay. it can fake you out. it will be all cool and crisp and you pull out all of your sweaters and scarves and gloves and hats and socks, and bam! it's 80 degrees again. i'm done with 80 degrees. i like cool. i like cold for that matter. i love the sweaters and scarves and hats and socks.

i work in a busy bakery where people come and go all day. i love to see all of their handknits. you can meet a lot of people by admiring their hats and sweaters. but , also, they might think you're a little crazy. "oh my god! that's the most beautiful sweater i've ever seen!! did you make it? what kind of yarn is that? where did you get it? can i feel it? now, let's just take a little peek and see how you finished off those seams..." there's a fine line, and i cross it all the time. i can't help it, i love to knit!

so, as the mercury drops, i will be happily bundled up and knitting away, inspired by the beautiful things i see every day.

hello fall! i've been waiting for you!

my grandmother's wisdom

those metal measuring cups belonged to my grandmother. she told me that when you peel an apple, you should try to keep the peel all in one piece and let it drop to the floor. the shape it landed in would be the first initial of the man you would marry. i'm thinking a lot of george's, charlie's and owen's were psyched about that!

apples and rain

yesterday we went apple picking. we like to try different orchards, so this year we went to pulsifer orchard in cornish, maine. the trees were loaded with apples. we picked mostly macintosh, my favorite, and cortlands, but we also got some jonagolds which are a cross between an heirloom jonathan apple and golden delicious. some of them were HUGE! it was a  grey afternoon, and the very minute we left the shop when we were done, it started to rain...perfect timing! some friends told us that an orchard in exeter, nh didn't have a single apple this year due to a cold spring and late frost-wow!

my childhood friend is coming to visit today. she lives in north carolina now and we hadn't seen each other in i'd say 17 years until last year when we connected again through facebook. i was nervous last year when she came, but she hadn't changed at all and we had a wonderful visit! i'm really looking forward to today!

rainy vacation

but, did get a lot of knitting and crocheting done, and visited the flea market in arundel.

so nice to relax and not work!!
